The container you choose determines loading feasibility, freight cost, cargo condition on arrival, and clearance complexity at Karachi. Put bagged DAP fertilizer in a standard dry container and it arrives intact. Put an assembled combine harvester in one and it does not fit. Ship temperature-sensitive vegetable seed in a dry container across the Arabian Sea in July and you risk germination failure. Standard dry containers — the workhorse for most agricultural imports
The 20-foot and 40-foot dry containers that fill Karachi Port and Port Qasim are what most agricultural cargo moves in. Bagged seed, boxed spare parts, palletised agrochemicals, and knocked-down irrigation equipment all ship in dry containers.
20-foot container: internal dimensions approximately 5.9m long × 2.35m wide × 2.39m high, roughly 33 cubic metres of volume, and a payload of about 28 tonnes. This is the right choice for dense cargo: bagged fertilizer, bagged seed, bagged pulses. The container is small enough that a 28-tonne load of DAP fills it before it cubes out.
40-foot container: approximately 12.03m × 2.35m × 2.39m, roughly 67 cubic metres, and a payload of about 26 tonnes. The 40-foot is better for lighter, bulkier cargo: boxed drip irrigation equipment, assembled greenhouse frames, bagged Rhodes grass hay. The payload is actually lower than the 20-foot because the container weighs more itself.
A 40-foot high-cube adds about 30cm of height, reaching roughly 2.69m inside. This extra height is useful for machinery that is taller than standard but not tall enough to need an open-top.

Refrigerated containers — when temperature matters
Refrigerated containers, commonly called reefers, maintain a set temperature typically between -25°C and +25°C. They are powered by the vessel's electrical supply during the voyage and by a generator set, or genset, during inland transport. At Karachi Port and Port Qasim, reefer plugs are available at the container terminals, but availability should be confirmed with the terminal before booking.
Agricultural cargo that typically needs reefers:
- Vegetable seed shipped during hot months. If a seed consignment sails from Europe or Southeast Asia in June or July, the container interior can exceed 40°C during the Red Sea or Arabian Sea leg. High temperatures can reduce germination rates, and suppliers of premium hybrid vegetable seed often require reefer transport as a condition of the variety warranty.

- Live plants, cuttings, and tissue culture material. These are the most temperature-sensitive agricultural imports and almost always ship in reefers with precise temperature and humidity settings.
- Some biological crop protection products. Microbial pesticides and bio-stimulants with live organisms can degrade at high temperatures and require cool-chain transport.
Reefers cost more than dry containers — both in freight and in terminal reefer monitoring charges at the destination. For seed lots where temperature control is borderline, the supplier's agronomist should be the one making the call, not the freight forwarder.
Open-top containers — for tall machinery loaded by crane
An open-top container has a removable roof — and often removable or drop-down end doors — so cargo can be loaded from above with a crane or forklift. They are used for:
- Tractors with cab or ROPS that exceed 2.39m internal height. A tractor with the wheels removed may fit in a high-cube container; a tractor with the wheels on and the cab intact usually needs an open-top.

- Assembled greenhouse frames and some irrigation equipment.
The open-top is covered with a tarpaulin secured by ropes. Water ingress through the tarpaulin is a risk on long ocean voyages, so machinery shipped in open-tops should be wrapped and corrosion-protected before loading. The container also cannot be stacked as high as a standard container on the vessel, which can affect the freight rate and vessel space allocation.
Flat-rack containers — for oversized equipment
Flat-rack containers have a solid base and end walls but no sides and no roof. They are used when the cargo is too wide, too tall, or both to fit in any enclosed container:
- Combine harvesters and forage harvesters. These are the most common flat-rack cargo among agricultural imports. - Wide tillage equipment, large sprayers with booms, and some irrigation pivots.

Flat-rack cargo is exposed to weather, so preparation matters. Machinery should be drained of fluids, batteries disconnected, rust-prone surfaces treated, and the entire unit wrapped or covered where possible. The flat-rack's open nature also means lashing and securing is critical: a machine that shifts during the voyage can damage itself, the flat-rack, or adjacent containers.
Bulk and breakbulk — when the cargo is measured in thousands of tonnes
At a certain scale, containers stop making economic sense. Bulk dry cargo — grain, fertilizer raw materials, oilseeds — loads directly into a vessel's holds and discharges at a dedicated terminal.
Port Qasim's Grain and Fertilizer Terminal, operated by Fauji Akbar Portia, handles exactly this traffic. The terminal has a capacity of 4 million tonnes per year, unloaders rated at 1,600 tonnes per hour, and six silos of 9,000 tonnes each. For import volumes between a few containers and a full vessel, breakbulk shipping — where the cargo is unitised on pallets or in sling bags and loaded individually rather than in containers — is an option. Breakbulk is common for project cargo: a consignment of several tractors, irrigation pumps, and generator sets shipped as one lot to a single importer.
How to choose the right container
The decision flows from three questions, in order:
- What are the cargo's dimensions and weight? This determines whether it fits in a standard 20-foot, needs a 40-foot high-cube, requires an open-top, or must go on a flat-rack.
- Does the cargo need temperature control? If yes, it goes in a reefer. The cost premium over a dry container is the insurance against product degradation.
- What is the shipment volume? Below roughly 10 container-loads, containerised shipping is the default. Above roughly 500 tonnes, bulk vessel economics start to dominate. In between, a freight forwarder can model both options.

A standard 20-foot dry container can carry roughly 28 tonnes of cargo, but the actual limit depends on the shipping line's weight policy and Pakistani road-weight regulations for the inland leg. Overloaded containers are refused at origin terminals and, if accepted, attract overweight surcharges at destination. Check the specific payload with your freight forwarder before stuffing.
Do seed shipments need a reefer container?+
Most seed shipments move in standard dry containers with desiccants and ventilation. Bulk fertilizer and grain are most economical in full vessel lots discharging at Port Qasim's Grain and Fertilizer Terminal. A single vessel can carry 25,000 to 55,000 tonnes, and the terminal's 1,600-tonne-per-hour unloaders discharge it in a day or two. Containerised fertilizer in 25kg or 50kg bags costs more per tonne in freight but may be necessary for smaller volumes or when bagged product is what the market demands.
